Words are the foundation of all communication and convey knowledge. A larger vocabulary brings many benefits, such as higher comprehension and accurate expression. Understanding one’s own language is key to learning everything else. The more words you know and can use meaningfully, the more knowledge you possess.
1. Learning Technical Terms
When diving into a specific field, begin by learning the key terms and their definitions, as these form the basis of any specialized area. Collect and write down all definitions relevant to the field and add them to your knowledge base. This will give you an overview and a basic understanding of the topic. As you continue exploring the subject, you’ll already be familiar with all the terms, allowing you to focus entirely on the content.
2. Creating a Personal Dictionary
To expand your vocabulary, keep a notebook or vocabulary book where you can write down any previously unknown or unclear words along with their meanings. Whenever you come across a word you don’t fully understand, look it up and record it in your notebook. If you’re reading a technical book, use a bookmark or a slip of paper to jot down any unfamiliar words. Later, look up these words and add them to your notebook. This way, you can maintain your reading flow instead of stopping immediately to look up each word.

By learning ten new words, you’re likely adding around 90 related words to your vocabulary without specifically studying them.
5. Learning Prefixes and Suffixes
One of the quickest ways to expand your vocabulary is to learn the meanings of commonly used prefixes, suffixes, and word roots. This way, you can deduce the meaning of many words. For example, if you know that the Latin prefix “inter” means “between,” you’ll understand words like interval, interaction, interdisciplinary, and international.
